Are coins still valuable?
Common coins versus valuable coins
Most coins you find in pocket change are still worth their face value. Millions of many dates were minted, and most of them show wear from years of circulation, so collectors pay little extra for them. That is why many people are surprised to learn that most coins have no premium at all.
Some coins stay valuable because they are scarce. A low-mintage date, a coin in high condition, or a coin with a notable error can sell for far more than face value. The value depends on the exact date, mint mark, and grade, not just the year on the coin.
- Common circulated pennies, nickels, and dimes are usually worth face value.
- Scarce dates and certain mint marks often carry a premium.
- Coins in higher grades sell for more than worn examples of the same date.
- Errors and varieties can be worth much more than standard coins.
Metal content still matters
Older U.S. coins made with precious metal are worth their metal content, which changes with market prices. Dimes, quarters, and half dollars minted before 1965 are 90 percent silver. Silver dollars and many older gold coins are valued partly for the metal they contain.
Pre-1965 nickels are not silver, with the exception of wartime nickels from 1942 to 1945, which contain about 35 percent silver. Most pre-1982 pennies are mostly copper. Check current metal prices and an online melt calculator before assuming a coin is worth a specific amount.
How to check a coin
Start by identifying the coin's date, mint mark, and any unusual features. Then compare it with a current price guide or recent sold listings for the same type and condition. Condition makes a big difference, so be honest about wear when you compare.
If a coin looks unusual or could be valuable, a reputable dealer or grading service can give you a more reliable opinion.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every old coin is valuable just because it is old.
- Cleaning a coin to make it look newer, which often lowers its value.
- Relying on one asking price instead of recent sold prices.
